Blog Poll

At Rich's request, a little poll before we continue storm clean-up.

Five questions to answer in your spare time.

1. What's your favorite music?

2. What's your favorite blog besides this one?

3. What's your favorite book?

4. What's your favorite source of science news?

5. What's your favorite movie?

And as a bonus,

6. What do you think the definition of "Planet" should be, and why?

24 Eloquent Orations:

On 9/02/2006 07:18:00 AM, Blogger Lifewish waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

1) Silence

2) Probably pooflingers.blogspot.com - it doesn't update very often but is Damn Good when it does

3) I have three bookcases of the things. You expect me to pick just one?

4) Scienceblogs.com

5) Fifth Element. Don't hate me for it.

6) Anything that a) orbits a star and b) has sufficient mass that a human highjumper couldn't achieve escape velocity

On 9/02/2006 10:14:00 AM, Blogger DaveScot waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

I don't play favorites.

On 9/02/2006 12:35:00 PM, Blogger Rich Hughes waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

1) Balearic / ambient.

2) Tough. 'Dispatches from the culture wars' just takes it, unless we can pretend homestarrunner is a blog!

3) Flowers for Algernon

4) KurzweilAI

5) Blade runner, Directors cut

6)I like lifewishe's, although in binary systems, starts would also apply..

Boo, Dave. I'd honestly be fascinated by yours.

On 9/02/2006 03:40:00 PM, Blogger blipey waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

1. The Blues, hands down. In one hour sets, the electric blues, accoustic for longer time periods. T-Bone Walker is currently getting the most play on my mp3.

2. Aetiology. My curiosity is always satisfied there. Perhaps because my knowledge in the areas Tara covers is not great.

3. Hmmm. The Years of Rice and Salt, Kim Stanley Robinson, for fiction & Eats, Shoots, and Leaves, Lynn Truss, for non-fiction

4. Scienceblogs.com

5. Memento or The Maltese Falcon

6. I really like Lifewish's idea of tying size {mass, really} to escape velocity, but would probably make the escape velocity requirement a bit higher...eliminate really large asteroids, etc.

Come on, Dave, you do too. IDiots can be stupid and detractors can't be...you've said so several times. Just post some answers.

I'm starting a topic on "after the bar closes" on this blog and the colourfull characters that play here. Feel free to add your two-penneth.

I'll get round to answering eventually, but in the meantime have the urge to comment:

Lifewish- "3) I have three bookcases of the things. You expect me to pick just one?"

3 bookcases? You're an amateur! I have 7 tall ones and 3 short ones.

This comment was from guthrie, see below. - ck

Once again, DaveStupidAss, you have mistaken the quantity of a thing for mastery of a thing. Besides, 10 bookcases (even if they're all tall) of things hardly represents much of a collection. I would have thought that in your 642 years (more is better, right?) on Earth, you would have collected more.

oh well.

Dear Blipey,

Since the comment above turns out to be from guthrie, there is a very small amount of egg on your oh-so-cute face. I hereby volunteer Janie and myself to very slowly lick it off.

:)

Kisses,
Kate

"As an aside:

Well, as flattered as we are about that, Arden's comment in that thread is really the truth. It's been slow here due to our trip to England, and then the preparation and clean-up of the storm. Our visitor numbers certainly reflect that, to be perfectly honest.

We are however, grateful that we'll have our own thread for discussion, separate from the UD thread.

I guess now we have to start back adding some content, so the "Church burning ebola boys" will have something to say about us!

:-)

Rich, you have our eternal gratitude.

That's church burnin' ebola boys. No "g" in burnin.

On 9/04/2006 12:45:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

Would 'Ebola' necessarily be capitalized?

On 9/04/2006 02:56:00 AM, Blogger Rich Hughes waxed damned near poetic whilst opining...

Remember folks, if you have N, Dave has N + X.

He’s not insecure, though.

*sips tea*

Janie and Kate, there may be some colour commentary on the thread, but we'll try and keep it good natured. We may target the vainglorious, though.

OOps. sorry, I forgot to sign my comment about numbers of bookcases, above.

Dave,

"That's church burnin' ebola boys. No "g" in burnin."

Sorry 'bout that! We stand corrected.

:)

Arden,

I don't think so, but it IS the name of something, so maybe. So that's a "no, maybe yes" for an answer. Anyone actually know?

Rich,

"Janie and Kate, there may be some colour commentary on the thread, but we'll try and keep it good natured. We may target the vainglorious, though."

I'm sure Janie will appreciate you keeping it good natured. We have just a little bit more clean-up to do, it's taking longer than we thought. I might just let her sleep in today though, because she has worked so hard. I'm generous like that. Then we'll get back to posting more regularly.

Guthrie,

I'll sign in under Janie's name and add your sig to that in just a minute.

Blipey,

You may want to revise your response to that comment.

Kisses,

Kate

Arden

No capitalization. I intended "Church burnin' ebola boys" to have an uneducated flavor to it i.e. coming from ignorant, lazy religious types. You church burnin' ebola boys stereotype the ID crowd that way - too lazy to study enough biology and ignorant for believing in bearded thunderers. I wanted the expression to appeal to you so I dropped the g and didn't capitalize ebola to give that flavor. I also wanted it to appeal to the opposite side thus while painting a suitable negative picture of chance worshippers it had to humorous enough to not be really mean spirited. By not being mean spirited one could imagine that Christ would approve of it. Burning down churches and destroying evil humans with ebola is exagerated enough to be clearly jocular.

I'm glad you liked it. Anyone who doesn't like it is one humorless fuck who is proably a real downer to be around.

Any time you think I'm lying offer to bet me it isn't true. Make it worth my while. I have a good number of friends that make me look poor in comparison and a good number with advanced degrees. The interesting thing is few of them have both advanced degrees and are youngish (under 50) self-made millionaires at the same time. The two factors seldom intersect (in my experience which is limited of course) with the exception of those whose advanced degree is doctor of medicine. We could speculate on the reasons for this. One might be that people who pursue PhDs are less interested in acquiring wealth than others. Another might be that people who pursue PhDs do it because they're insecure and need it for self-esteem. Insecure people don't tend to compete well. Another might be that they're naive and think the more formal education you have the more successful in life you'll be. Naive people don't tend to compete well either.

Blipey,

No, that's okay; I'll let it stand. Now, if I was DaveTard or Dimski or O'Leary or Sal or.... (you get the point), I'd erase it or some such nonsense and pretend it never occurred. However, I did write it, so it should stand.

I, however, do stand by the nature of my statement in any regard. I'll also stand by Rich's statement of DaveTard Additives. They were specifically misplaced here, but I believe they hold true in general.

Oooohh! Dave's looking to bet! Too bad he probably learned to bet and pay out from Dimski, too.

Anyone ever get that bottle of single malt scotch?

Don't worry, it took us a while to get used to it, but now we've grown quite attached to it. True strokes of genius are seldom appreciated right away.

3 bookcases? You're an amateur! I have 7 tall ones and 3 short ones.

I've only just graduated so am currently living at home. That's 3 full-height bookcases in one small room.

Bah. You aren't a REAL book lover til you have huge stacks of them all over, since you ran out of bookshelf space long ago.

First, let me apologize to Dave as the book-cases comment was not him. Sorry Dave. I do hope you come back – whilst we may never agree on the legitimacy of ID, surely the dialogue is valuable? If you ever come to Chicago, Dave, please let me take you out as my guest. We can do burgers and beers or upscale, the choice is yours – IF you promise not to shoot me.

Arden- a couple more years and I'll be like that. Give me time.

Lifewish- I had that problem as well. It reached the stage where there were books under my bed, and books piled up around the floor, leaving only a central walkway to get anywhere.

1. Music of the spheres.

3. Books? Bah. Nearly everything worth reading is on scrolls.

6. As long as it includes Jupiter, I'm ok with it. The other gods will just have to deal with being demoted to dwarf-class.
