Enunciations, Utterances, Opinions and Comments

Dressing it up, and hiding from the spam bots.


So besides the blandness of "comments" and "stated", I'm trying to ditch those words in the code for the blog to avoid attracting spam bots. (Apparently one of the keywords they look for is "comments".) Spam comments haven't yet been a problem, and I'd like to do whatever I can to keep it that way.

I liked "opined thusly" for the recent comments on the sidebar, but hated "Recent Opinions" for the header. Additionally, I think "opinions" is probably not uncommon enough to avoid the spam bots.

Lifewish has offered several suggestions, two of which I'm liking.

"enunciate" and "utter".

I've also been batting around "articulate", "pronounce", and "orate".

So the header would be "Recent Enunciations" or "Recent Utterances", the link at the bottom of a post on the home page would read "Enunciations" or "Utterances", and the header at the top of the list of comments would read the same. The actual recent comments themselves on the sidebar would read "blipey enunciated thusly" or "Lifewish uttered", either one with or without the "thusly".

What are your thoughts? I'm pretty willing to go with a majority vote on this. Feel free to offer alternatives.

Just a thought: if there was more than one phrase that you liked, it'd be extremely easy to rig the code to pick one at random.

Lifewish, you are such a doll. I had been thinking that would be really cool if it could be done, but I didn't want to impose any more than I already had.

Eructations is funny, if a little hard to say. But we aren't saying it, are we? Which brings me to the Oratory bit--we really aren't orating anything (unless we all read our posts aloud while typing).

I'm still a fan of Nietzsche-esque "Thus spake blipey..."

Well unless you spoke aloud while typing that doesn't necessarily fit well either. Any choice will have poor fit for the purpose. I will venture she is merely seeking the least poor fit.

I didn't think of it as pretense, I thought of it as drama. Melodrama, maybe. Definitely light-hearted.

I'm very ok with "thus spake blipey", or "thus eructated guthrie".

Is this something to do with why I get shed-loads of spam selling viagra, cialis, cheap watches etc., etc., since getting mildly hooked on blogging (a habit which I am trying to break, or at least keep in check). Will it stop if I sever all connections with Blogger? Is there a simple solution, such as a free spam filter that works?

I think that's a whole different thing, Alan. What I was talking about was bogus comments popping up in blog threads.

It hasn't gone anywhere, Alan. I've been sick with the flu or something, and then I was playing with the site a little bit. I'm feeling much better than I was, but I haven't really felt up to heavy biology.

We'll come back 'round to it soon, I promise.

J'ai étudié à l'école, mais cela ne parle pas, vraiment. Le passé me donne toujours des problèmes. Apparemment, Bablefish ne s'inquiète pas de ma grammaire, l'une ou l'autre.

Pour un example, je dit "J'etude dans l'ecole" et Bablefish dit "J'ai étudié à l'école".

Et je ne sais toujours pas écrire le cedilla ou les accents.

Mes professeurs disent toujours "Repetez s'il vous plait" et "Repondez, s'il vous plait" et "Ecrivez, s'il vous plait"...

Et ils disent "La fille est dans la musee". Et nous disons "La fille est dans la musee". "Classe, ou est la fille?" "La fille est dans la musee." Facile, mais pas de tres utile.

I wasn't sure of the spelling, so I plugged in "comme ci comme ca" into Bablefish.

It translated back to English--

like Ci like Ca
