This suggests that the limiting factor isn't the stupid number of functions called, but rather the amount of junk that has to be downloaded. That'll take more thought.

Looks like there still might be a problem with the recent comments.
I just left a comment to your guest post, but it's not showing up in the recent comments.
I left one a while ago in another thread and it showed up fine.

Lifewish, it seems to have had no problem recognizing Zach's comment in the new post, so it's definitely reading the new post and that's not the issue.
Kate comments with IE7, but once that comment gets submitted, it doesn't seem like that should be an issue...
On a different but related note, in IE7, changing the script has caused the sudden additon of a large blank space at the bottom of the home page beneath the last logo. I've looked for an issue with the HTML but can't see one yet. I'm not fluent in javascript (I'm a copy/paste/tweak girl) so I have no idea whether that might be the cause.

Hmmm... I just ran a test comment on that thread from Kate's account, in IE7. It showed up fine. It must have just not liked that particular comment, or there was a problem with the comment posting.
Looks like a fluke. Or the script just has a problem with Kate...
She can be a little harsh sometimes...

I have no idea what could be causing the IE7 problem. IE is famous for living in its own little world of screwed-up standards. As far as I can tell, in IE7 they just looked at IE, looked at the proper way of doing it, and took the average...
I'm on Linux*, so I can't even install IE7 to figure out the problem. You're on your own, I'm afraid.
* I'm aware that this is not something to admit to in polite company. I figure that that's not an issue here :)

HEY!
I figured out what was causing IE to add that big fat space at the bottom of the page...
After the last "html" tag, there was one space. Not a letter, or a tab, or anything useful.
One space.
I got rid of it (laughing to myself that that might be the IE issue, but never dreaming that was really it) and it fixed it.
IE was taking that space and adding about a third of a page worth of blank space at the end.
Gates' boys really need to pull their heads out of their butts.

That's a scarily bad bug. I'd thought that the MS folk were a bit better than that these days. Guess I won't be replacing my copy of Ubuntu with Vista...

Actually, in my quest to figure out what was wrong I even checked the site on one of Ruthie's computers which still have IE6 on them.
IE6 had the same problem, which it hadn't had in the past, so I knew it was something new in the code that IE wasn't liking. I had pretty much come to the conclusion that it must have been something with the recent comments code, since that was the only real new thing.
What a pain.
